THE PROJECT

The main motivation behind the project is to walk a number of major stages of The Way, first Cultural European Itinerary (CEI).

The CEI is a distinctive mark granted by the European Council to those paths, stretches or routes that embody a series of values. Through the Cultural Itineraries, the European Counsel intends to go further than the usual campaign to launch a cultural or tourist product and takes sides with the protection of the European cultural values, encouraging new encounters among European youngsters, restoring the value of neglected historical assets and developing programmes of cooperation. The educational system can not overlook this reality, that’s why we recover this medieval European itinerary, approaching it as an educational tool from the XXIst century.

The main reasons driving this project have to do with our teaching having in mind the basic competences and the need to extend the learning of foreign languages and the creative use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). We find it necessary for our students to become aware of the fact they belong to a community called Europe, and of the importance of learning other languages. These encounters among students should arouse their interest and curiosity to find out what happens beyond their immediate environment.

We’ll look into whatever The Way can add to the curriculum of all subject-matters, from History and Geography to Arts and  Music through Physical Education, naturally. As a result, this experience will necessarily bring about significant learning, chiefly developing autonomy and personal initiative.

The core activity of the project is the coming together of all its members to walk several stages of The Way during a week. The carrying out of the activities involved in the encounters (linguistic workshops, personal and social interaction, work groups, cultural visits, exchanges of cultural idioms) will take place in a setting completely different from that of the school, mornings busy with the walking and gathering of information about the weather, pictures, video, etc, followed by cultural visits and linguistic workshops in the afternoon and the mixing with the rest of the pilgrims staying at the “albergue” (pilgrims’ house)
